Your own Alterations and Improvements

You may carry out improvements or alterations to your home yourself, provided you obtain written permission from the Society. Your application should contain full details of the work proposed. We will give our consent unless your proposals would make the dwelling unsafe, cost the Society more for future maintenance, or reduce the dwelling's value. The Society has the right to impose conditions, and these will normally be designed to protect the structure of the dwelling or the interests of other tenants.

Improvements which need permission include additions or alterations to structure, services or fixtures and fittings - some examples are: fitting a new window; knocking down a wall; fitting new kitchen units; or building a garden shed. You must check before you start any work.

Also, before you carry out any internal or external alterations to the structure, you should contact your local Council, because it is your responsibility to obtain any planning approval, or building regulations permission that may be needed. Your rent will not go up as a result of any improvements you make, and their value will not be taken into account if you buy your home. However, some improvements may result in you paying more rates.

We may require you to reinstate the dwelling to its original condition if you terminate your tenancy later, but you will be told about this when you apply for permission to do the work.
